Encounter is a new program that we have created and introduced into our ministry. This academic year, we’ve dedicated a month to each of the seven pillars of Catholic Social Teaching: life and dignity of the human person; call to family, community, and participation; rights and responsibilities; option for the poor and vulnerable; the dignity of work and rights of workers; solidarity; and care for God’s creation. The first two weeks of each month encompass the spiritual aspect of each pillar through witnesses and faith, while the second two weeks explore the social justice aspect through justice and how to respond. Each pillar reflects back to the dignity of the person, so having the opportunity to serve God’s people and emphasizing their dignity has been a major component of Encounter.
Pope Francis says, “The world tells us to seek power and money; God tells us to seek service, humility and love.” Each month a volunteer opportunity is set up for student participation that is relevant to each pillar. Each service project is unique in its humbling experience and opportunity to share Christ’s love with the community. We have worked with various Catholic groups around the city such as Dorothy Day House of Hospitality, Missionaries of Charity and Birth Right. According to student John Klyce, “It can be a reality check to see others who have less than you materially but so much more than you spiritually. It really puts things into perspective when someone who has nothing greets you with a smile. It’s a big wake up call and makes me appreciate what I have so much more.”
